Art and Architecture:
A Psychic Vacuum
Ran into some friends this past weekend and went to this great thing called A Psychic Vacuum, created by English artist Mike Nelson.
Located at an old building that is very run down and unused, his creation is pretty baffling. A maze of rooms has been built for the piece. It is really hard to describe, the whole project is very disorienting. It is hard to tell what is fake and what it real. You can check out the website here and if you are in NYC this month, it is worth the effort.

Books to check out:
This book seems really interesting. The art and trends that came out of this period are just beginning to emerge from a historical perspective. I have taken some text from the intro to the book. I just saw that movie The Lives of Others. It is really something to think about the changes that artists went through while the wall was up and then the situation after it fell. If this is something that you are into, this seems like a good place to start:
The Manifesta Decade
Debates on Contemporary Art Exhibitions and Biennials in Post-Wall Europe
Manifesta, the first itinerant European Biennial for Contemporary Art, emerged in a post-wall, globalizing Europe. Founded in 1993, it organized traveling exhibitions aimed at providing a new framework for cultural exchange and collaboration between artists and curators from across the continent. The Manifesta Decade marks Manifesta's ten years of exhibits with original essays, unpublished images, and texts that not only document the different Manifesta exhibits but also examine the cultural, curatorial, and political terrain of the Europe from which they sprang.

My second book recommendation is a must read for a couple PIPSters out there. Maybe some birthday presents? I thumbed through this one, it is great, a lot of good writing about trash and artist projects.
Trash explores the ethics and psychology of trash and what these reveal about contemporary industrial society. The investigations range from the whimsical to the disturbing, and offers a variety of approaches to rehabilitating and rediscovering what is too commonly tossed aside.
